Spider veins
We treat spider veins and the deeper-lying reticular veins with vascular lasers, usually with the long-pulse Nd:YAG laser. Compression stockings are not needed after laser treatment.
Overview
Spider veins are fine, superficially visible small vessels, usually on the legs. Somewhat deeper lie the reticular veins, small varicose veins running in a net-like pattern. Our practice has several laser systems with which both forms can be treated; usually we use the long-pulse Nd:YAG laser for this.
Alongside sclerotherapy, the laser is one way of treating such vessels. Two differences matter here: no compression stockings need to be worn after laser treatment, and the risk of permanent scars is low, though not ruled out. Which method is suitable in the individual case depends on the size and the depth of the vessels; we clarify that during the examination.
The laser light is absorbed by the red blood pigment in the vessels and converted into heat; the vessel closes and is broken down by the body over the following weeks. Tanned skin reacts more strongly to the laser light and carries a higher risk of pigment shifts. Please come to the treatment untanned where possible; the cooler season is often more favourable for this.

Laser types for spider veins
To treat spider veins we use the following systems:
- Long-pulse Nd:YAG laser: long-pulsed laser with a high penetration depth; for spider veins and deeper-lying vessels this is the system we usually use.
- Long-pulsed dye laser: its light is absorbed by the red blood pigment.
- KTP laser: 532 nm; for spider veins following sclerotherapy.
- IPL/RF: combination of intense pulsed flash light and radiofrequency current; among other things for diffuse redness and fine small vessels.
