Fat deposits (xanthelasma)
Xanthelasmata are whitish-yellow fat deposits on the eyelids. In about 30 per cent of those affected a lipid metabolism disorder lies behind them, which is why the blood lipid values should be checked before any removal.
Overview
Fat deposits of the skin known as xanthelasmata appear as whitish-yellow patches or small nodules. They are found mainly at the inner corners of the eyes and on the upper and lower eyelids.
In about 30 per cent of those affected a lipid metabolism disorder lies behind them. Before any treatment the blood fat and cholesterol values should therefore be checked and, if they are raised, brought back to normal through a change of diet or with medication.
Xanthelasmata can be removed with the erbium:YAG laser, which ablates the deposits at the surface. Injection lipolysis, in which a fat-dissolving solution is injected into the tissue, is an alternative. [PLATZHALTER: Behandelt die Praxis Xanthelasmen, und mit welchem der beiden Verfahren?]
