KTP laser (532 nm)

The KTP laser works with light of 532 nm wavelength, which is absorbed by the red blood pigment. We use it for vascular changes: dilated small vessels on the face, spider naevi, haemangiomas, port-wine stains and spider veins following sclerotherapy.

Overview

The KTP laser works with a wavelength of 532 nm and is used to treat vascular changes. Its light lies in a range that almost matches the absorption behaviour of oxyhaemoglobin, the oxygen-rich red blood pigment. It is therefore taken up preferentially in the blood vessels. The high pulse energies are matched to the thermal relaxation time of the vessels, that is, to the time in which a vessel gives off the heat it has absorbed. In this way the heat stays in the vessel while the surrounding tissue is affected as little as possible. Side effects such as scars, thermal damage or purpura (a temporary bluish discolouration) are comparatively rare; they cannot be ruled out.
