Hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating)

With increased sweating in the armpits, the sweat glands can be reduced with fractional radiofrequency microneedling. Treatment with botulinum toxin is available as an alternative.

Overview

Hyperhidrosis is the term for increased sweating. This page concerns the form in the armpits (axillary hyperhidrosis), for which two procedures are available in our practice.

In fractional radiofrequency microneedling, fine needles deliver radiofrequency energy into the depth of the skin, where the sweat glands lie; the glands are thereby ablated and reduced in number. As a rule two to four sessions at intervals of about four weeks are needed. For pain relief an anaesthetic cream and/or cold anaesthesia can be used.

Treatment with botulinum toxin is an alternative. The active substance is injected superficially into the skin and temporarily reduces the local sweat production; it is used in the armpits. Procedure, duration of effect and risks are described on the linked treatment pages.
