Acne scars

Acne scars that remain can be treated with laser and radiofrequency methods. The precondition is that the acne itself is no longer active.

Overview

Scars are among the consequences of acne that remain even after the inflammation has subsided. Laser and radiofrequency methods are available to treat them. Risks such as pigment disorders or wound-healing disorders can be reduced with these methods, but they cannot be ruled out entirely; we discuss them with you before the treatment.

Before a treatment with laser or radiofrequency microneedling begins, the acne should have largely and lastingly healed through topical or systemic therapy. On actively inflamed skin a scar treatment does not make sense, and after a systemic treatment with vitamin A acid derivatives a waiting period must be observed before any laser treatment. Treating the active acne itself is the subject of our acne consultation.

Which method is suitable for you is clarified in the examination. Depressed (atrophic) scars can be treated fractionally with the CO₂ laser. Radiofrequency microneedling delivers the energy through fine needles into the depth and largely spares the skin surface. The Erbium:YAG laser ablates superficial layers of skin. You will find the procedure, the number of sessions, downtime and risks of each method on the linked treatment pages.

Areas of application

  • Acne scars after the acne has healed
  • Depressed (atrophic) acne scars (fractional CO₂ laser, radiofrequency microneedling)
  • Acne scars, depending on the findings also by superficial ablation (Erbium:YAG laser)
